online education FOR
MUSICIANS & BANDS
-
This course is geared towards D.I.Y. musicians in punk, hardcore, and alternative bands who are seeking a deeper understanding of music theory and musicianship skills. It is designed to help improve students’ capability to compose, perform, and interpret music within the context of the alternative music scene. All age ranges are welcome, though parental consent may be required for students under 18.
For beginners (little to no understanding of music theory), this class will provide a clear-cut understanding of core music theory and musicianship concepts that directly benefit students in practical settings. Where applicable, beginners will receive a “bridge lesson" before the call begins to review any prerequisite knowledge prior to the primary lesson.
For intermediate musicians, this class will help recontextualize music theory concepts in a way that feels more connected and applicable to alternative D.I.Y. spaces rather than purely academic. Through the use of unique and specialized teaching strategies, this class is geared towards making music theory feel accessible and easy to understand.
Class content is divided into five cycles and consistently loops, which allows for new students at any time with minimal catchup. Each cycle can last anywhere from 3-6 weeks depending on the pace of the class and feedback from students. The cycles include the following:
Cycle 1: Reading & Interpreting Music
Cycle 2: Scales & Tonality
Cycle 3: Chords & Harmony
Cycle 4: Rhythm & Meter
Cycle 5: Ear Training & Listening
Cycle 6: Composition & Analysis
Each class follows a format of introducing a core concept, providing an explanation of how it can be applied practically, a group activity, and a Q&A. Students who struggle to understand specific concepts may receive additional resources outside of class to help bridge gaps.
This class is taught by Brian Bartels, who has been teaching music theory and applied music since 2016. Brian started teaching while in high school by providing private lessons to students who wanted to imitate their heroes on the stage. These lessons were tailored to the unique interests of his students without neglecting relevant music theory and musicianship skills.
Brian received his Associate Degree in Music to further expand his existing knowledge of music and has performed all over the country in punk rock and alternative bands–including crowds of as many as 5,000 people. His approach combines humor, grace, and structure to create an ideal learning environment for the people who dream of the day they can write, record, release, and perform their music to people it resonates with around the world.
